Heritage: A Company Built on Principles

Where Did AMSOIL Come From?

AMSOIL did not begin as a marketing idea. It began with a question, a standard, and a refusal to settle for what everyone else considered “good enough”.

Founder Albert J. Amatuzio had seen synthetic lubricants perform in jet aircraft, where extreme heat, pressure, and operating demands left little room for compromise. Looking at the protection these lubricants delivered in aviation, he asked a simple but powerful question: if synthetic lubricants worked so well in jet engines, why were motorists still relying on conventional oil in the vehicles they depended on every day?

That question helped shape the company AMSOIL would become. In the early 1960s, Al began serious research into synthetic lubricants for automotive use, convinced that the same performance benefits seen in aviation could improve engine protection, cleanliness, durability, and cold-weather operation in everyday vehicles.

It was not an easy path. At the time, oil quality was limited, synthetic motor oil was unfamiliar to most people, and many doubted there was any need to challenge the conventional thinking of the day. But Al kept pushing, experimenting with formulations, studying chemistry and additives, and refining the product until the idea became something real.

The Birth of a New Way to Think of Motor Oil

That persistence led to one of the defining moments in AMSOIL history. In 1972, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil became the first synthetic motor oil in the world to meet American Petroleum Institute service requirements, setting a new benchmark for motor oil performance and opening the door to a new era in lubrication.

But the company’s story was never only about being first. It was also about the principles behind the work: excellence, integrity, hard work, and treating people properly. Those values showed up in the way Al led, the standards he demanded, and the way AMSOIL continued to build products intended to solve real-world problems rather than simply follow industry habits.

As AMSOIL grew, those principles remained visible in the company’s development. The product line expanded into gear lubes, two-cycle oils, diesel oils, racing oils, transmission fluids, marine lubricants, and other categories that helped define synthetic lubrication for more than just passenger cars. The goal was not growth for its own sake, but progress through better engineering, better protection, and better performance.

Why Independent Dealers?

That same mindset also shaped the AMSOIL Dealer network. Al believed people who understood the products and believed in them should have the opportunity to build something of their own, and in 1973 that vision helped give rise to the AMSOIL Dealer network. It reflected another core idea that still matters today: good products deserve honest people who can explain them well.

In many ways, AMSOIL’s early history is the story of a company built on conviction before it was built on scale. The motivation came first. The standards came first. The innovation came first. Everything else followed from that foundation.

For people who look back at AMSOIL history today, the company’s firsts are important. But the deeper story is that those firsts came from principles: the willingness to question accepted limits, the discipline to do the work, and the belief that performance and integrity should go together.
