Well, one isn’t new, but it has been reformulated. For a few years now Amsoil has had their Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 5W-40 Diesel Oil (DEO) to address the newer diesel engines meeting the emissions required since 2007. Now added to this line of oils comes Amsoil’s Premium API CJ-4 Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel Oil (DME). Both are high quality synthetic oils and are backwards compatible making them a perfect choice for those that have pre-2007 models in their fleet as well.
Both of these new oils now feature extended drain intervals in standard diesel applications of three times the original factory recommended drain, but not to exceed 50,000 miles/600 hours or one year. As with other Amsoil oils, if using oil analysis, this interval can be increased if the results support it. For gasoline engines, this interval is two times the normal drain and not to exceed 15,000 miles.
Amsoil redid the oil still using high grade base stocks and additives, but increased the heavy-duty dispersant additives and increasing the oils to a 10.4 TBN to help control soot and prevent thickening that can occur from the EGR system these newer engines now have. The oils also help protect against corrosion, cylinder bore polishing (wear), and prevent the formation of varnish/sludge deposits. They offer a high level of oxidation stability to resist heat and breakdown at high temperatures (great for turbos), plus with their low ash formulation, they help provide long life for the diesel particulate filter (DPF).
Because these new oils do not suffer from high burn off, less oil vapor ends up being passed back into the combustion chamber, lowering emissions and oil consumption. They remain stable at high temperatures keeping protection levels high as well as MPG.
The other Amsoil Diesel Oils are still available for older vehicles not needing to meet the CJ-4 specs. These include the Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel and Marine Motor Oil (AME) and Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil (HDD).
These new Premium Oils are an excellent choice to reduce costs for fleet owners because they are backward compatible. By consolidating to one oil for all engines, you no longer need to carry different ones to handle different specs. These oils are formulated for extended drains, so this reduces downtime as well as lowering costs by needing to pay for labor and oil at standard intervals. Plus they have shown in testing to increase MPG, by up to 3%, according to the EPA, thus saving additional money on fuel costs.
